Right to Buy

Take the first step towards owning your home with the Right to Buy scheme.

Imagine the freedom to make your own choices, invest in your future, and step onto the property ladder.

Now is the perfect time to transform your home into a lasting asset for you and your family.

Right to Buy explained

The Right to Buy scheme allows you to purchase your home at a significant discount, making it easier to get on the property ladder. It's a great way to save money, secure your future, and own a place you can call your own.

Who can apply for Right to Buy?

You could be eligible for a Right to Buy discount if:

  • You were a council tenant when your home was transferred to your current landlord. If so, you could be eligible to buy your home as if you were still a council tenant.
  • You hold a Secure Tenancy and been a public sector tenant for at least three years.
  • You don’t live in sheltered housing or other housing.
  • Your home isn't due to be demolished.
  • You don’t have any legal problems with debt.
  • You don’t have any outstanding possession orders.

You don’t have to do it alone—you can make a joint application if eligible. You might be able to buy your home with:

  • Someone who shares your tenancy.
  • Your spouse or civil partner.
  • Up to three family members who’ve lived with you for the past 12 months, even if they aren’t on the tenancy agreement, as long as it’s their main home.

You can check if you're eligible by taking part in The Government's eligibility quiz.

What discount could you get?

The longer you’ve been a tenant, the bigger the discount taken off the market value of your home, up to a maximum discount of £102,400.

Discount levels for houses and flats start at three years of eligible tenancy, increasing to a maximum of 70 percent of the property value depending on how long you've been a tenant.

You could also check out local estate agents and property websites to get an idea of what your property could be worth.

To work out what discount you could receive, use the Right to Buy calculator.

Ready to get started?

To move forward with the Right to Buy process, start by exploring your eligibility by taking the The Government's eligibility quiz.
