Work progressing well at innovative affordable development in Huntingdon

California Meadows is our fully-affordable housing development in Huntingdon, which is being built using an innovative modern method of construction (MMC).

There’ll be 56 homes on the development, made up of one, two and three-bedroom properties and work on the site is progressing well.

What’s a modern method of construction and how are these homes being built?

For California Meadows, timber-framed panels are manufactured in factory conditions before being transported to the site and craned into place.

The panels are built using sustainably-sourced timber and delivered to site as complete wall panels with insulation and external cladding.

The panels are being made by LoCaL Homes in Walsall and Burmor Construction is the contractor working on this development on behalf of Longhurst Group.

The first homes at the development are nearing completion and Marcus Keys, Executive Director of Growth and Development said he was pleased to see the progress being made.

As a Group, we're keen to explore modern methods of construction as it'll help us to not only reduce our carbon footprint during construction, but by having the panels built in factory conditions, this should also ensure improved levels of quality in the end product.

Marcus Keys, Executive Director of Growth and Development

"Not only are we helping to address the need for affordable housing in this area, but we're providing high-quality and innovative properties to give local people the opportunity to take their first step onto the property ladder."

Brownfield site regeneration

California Meadows is being built on a site which was once part of the Regional College's Huntingdon campus and is being part-funded through a grant from Homes England as part of our strategic partnership.

Marcus said that redeveloping brownfield sites formed part of our development programme.

He added: "It's important to us that we bring brownfield sites, which are often disused, back into use and this development is a perfect example of that vision unfolding.

"We're also committed to providing the homes people want, where they're needed most and that's another reason why I'm so pleased to see California Meadows come to fruition.

"I'm sure people will agree that the contemporary style of these homes is a completely different look from many affordable housing schemes that are seen up and down the country and I'm confident this will prove popular with our potential future customers."
